1968 BRIDGEHAMPTON CAN AM PROGRAM COVER
Mark Donohue McLarenMk6B. Always immaculate in both car and driver. Donohue wins with only Jim Hall finishing on the same lap.
Donohue qualified 4th behind Hulme, McLaren and Peter Revson. The factory McLarens led a tight fought race. Donohue stayed steady and fast and finished first.
John Surtees Lola T160 was not good all weekend. John could only qualify 10th and blew his motor after 12 laps.
Denny Hulme qualfiied on the pole but failed to finish. Hulme led the McLaren team in 1968 and was Can Am Champion for the year.
Bruce McLaren in his Mk 8A. Bruce headed the field but was passed on lap 37 by Jim Hall. McLaren kept close but stopped with a broken engine. Bridgehampton was the only race in ‘68 that the McLarens failed to finish.
McLaren hustles through the dunes of Bridgehampton. Contrast this superb challenge with what today’s circuits look like.
Bob Nagel’s Lola T-70. Nagel was a solid competitor in CanAm and SCCA. At this race Bob failed to finish as his transmission packed it in.
Fred Pipin in his coppertone Lola from Jack Doublas Chevy. Pipin raced most of the season with his best result a 7th at the Mid Ohio USRRC.
Brett Lunger in the Caldwell D7B was a DNF, here pulling over. Sam Posey was to drive it but opted for the Autodynamics Lola &-160
The always fast and very versatile Mario Andretti qualified well in George Bignotti’s Lola but was out in 4 laps.
